On 1st January 2015 the new IET wiring regulations came into effect. An amendment was added to the BS: 7671:2008 standards to incorporate these new rules. The biggest changes are designed to maximise safety for contractors and consumers, improving the quality of workmanship and the finish. The new 3rd amendment is supported by both the NICEIC and ELECSA because they share the same focus on promoting safety and professionalism.
From 1st July electrical contractors in the UK need to carry an updated copy of the standards, particularly when they carry out assessments. This should be referred to on all projects to ensure that the workmanship is in compliance.
Changes to any industrial standards always include a grace period so that contractors can adopt them. In terms of BS: 7671:2008 incorporating Amendment 3:2015 this was six months, meaning electricians had until 30th June to get up to date. Contractors who don’t follow the new standard can now find themselves in serious legal trouble, especially if their workmanship leads to a problem or an accident.
Both the NICEIC and ELECSA have sent reminders to their registered contractors to inform them the grace period has elapsed and they need to comply with the new standards. Both brands are offering a free webinar on 23rd July for electricians that need help understanding and adhering with the standards. People that need additional help after this can also complete the 3rd Amendment Online Training Course which is packed with useful tips and guidance about the new rules.
